The Design
Commonly used among the British Commonwealth Nations, a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II stamps their official coin’s obverse. Along with Her Majesty’s effigy, the inscriptions read “ELIZABETH II,” “50 DOLLARS,” and the mint year.
The reverse depicts a Canadian national symbol: the sugar maple leaf. The English and French inscriptions on the outer rim refer to the coin’s origin, metal content, purity, and weight: “CANADA,” “9999,” “FINE GOLD,” “1 OZ,” and “OR PUR.”
Mintage
Released in 1979 in the bullion market, the Gold Canadian Maple Leafs faced strong competitors, like the South African Krugerrand and the Austrian 100 Corona.
The collection debuted with the traditional 1 oz coin minted with 24k gold. The following annual editions maintained this high level of gold content, including the fractional variations of ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz, and the tiny 1 gram added later to the series.
The 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf has a face value of USD 50, and the Canadian Government guarantees its legal tender status.
