The Design of Gold britannia

Created in 1987 aiming to stamp the coin’s reverse side, Britannia is a warrior personification of Britain, protecting the islands as she carries the Union Jack Shield and a trident. The almost invisible inscriptions that closely encircle her image are part of the new security measures and embellish the design. They read: “Decus et Tutamen”, meaning “an ornament and a safeguard.” The words inscribed on the outer rim identify the coin. They read: “BRITANNIA,” “2023,” “½ oz,” “999.9,” and “FINE GOLD,” standing for the year of mintage, weight, fineness, and metal content.

The obverse honors the memorable Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Her effigy displays a right profile of an 89-year-old Queen wearing the glorious George IV State Diadem Crown. Along the image, the inscriptions read “50 POUNDS” for the denomination, “ELIZABETH II,” and “D. G. REG. F. D” meaning “By the grace of God, Queen” in Latin.
