The US Mint first released the Gold Buffalo Coin in 2006, making the West Point branch the only facility in charge of its production.
Created to be a counterpart of the American Gold Eagles, the Gold Buffalos differ because of their metal content levels. While the Gold Eagle uses 22-carat gold in its composition, the Gold Buffalo uses 24-carat gold.
Each coin contains 1 oz of fine .9999 pure gold in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, with a 32mm diameter (1.287 in) and a thickness of 2.95 mm (0.116 in) with reeded edges. Bearing a face value of USD 50, the coin also holds legal tender status fully guaranteed by the US Government.
The Design
The obverse displays the Indian Head Nickel, designed by James Earle Fraser to be issued in 1913 for widespread circulation coins. The original depiction got an update, but the main features remained preserved.
The Native American Chief’s bust carries traces from different tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. “LIBERTY” is on the upper rim, in front of the Chief’s forehead, followed by the year of mintage, and the “F,” initial for ”Fraser,” on the lower left.
The reverse showcases an upstanding American Bison similar to a Buffalo, hence the moniker. The inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” arch over the buffalo. “IN GOD WE TRUST” is beside the animal’s muzzle. The coin’s reference for weight, metal content, fineness, and face value is beneath the image, through “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD ”. 1 oz gold buffalo coin
