Australian nugget 1 oz. Recognized because of its high-quality standards, the Perth Mint also stands out for its popular coin collections. Besides the famous Lunar Series, the Perth Mint excels at its animal-designed collections, which include the Kangaroo Series.
Minted in platinum, silver and gold, the Kangaroo Series debuted in 1987, with the standard 1 oz and the ½ oz gold coins.
Among fractional coin sizes, the half-troy-ounce coin is usually the heaviest one. In the Kangaroo Series, the ½ oz coin carries the same patterns used in the one-troy counterpart: the Kangaroo motif, the security features, and the 99.99% purity level.

Gold Kangaroo Designs of Australian nugget 1 oz
As the series name explains, the Australian Kangaroo is the motif stamped on the coins’ reverse side. These marsupials are indigenous to Australia, especially the Red Kangaroo.
Kangaroos became a national symbol in 1908 by inclusion in the country’s Coat of Arms, representing the nation’s fast development, always moving forward, like a kangaroo.
The series’ popularity comes from the design variation. The annual editions showcase a different depiction of the kangaroo in its natural habitat, attracting coin collectors from all over the globe.
The reverse side also displays the series name “KANGAROO,” the year of mintage, weight, fineness, and metal content.
The coin’s obverse features the former Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy. It is commonplace for British Commonwealth nations to stamp Her Majesty’s profile on coins. The one featured in the Kangaroo Series is a Jody Clark depiction dating back to 2015. And, according to the Australian Mint’s announcement, from the second half of 2023, the series will receive the effigy of King Charles III, so this could be the last chance to purchase Gold Kangaroos featuring the late Queen.
The inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” and the coin’s denomination of “50 DOLLARS” encircle the portrait.
The Australian Perth Mint
The foundation of the Perth Mint dates back to 1899 in Perth. As Australia used to be a British colony, the Royal Mint wanted a local facility to ease precious metal exploitation and refining. The branch became an independent company owned by the Western Australian Government when Australia became a sovereign nation.
The experience of producing coins and other bullion items for internal and international purposes helped the Australian Mint to conquer recognition and strengthen its business in the bullion market.
